Julia Carrie Wong’s profile of Tesla’s employee working conditions posted on May 18th 2017 on the Guardian.com is well worth a read. The journalist provides insight into the actual consequences of working for Elon Musk in the Tesla factory and the details are not flattering.
Musk, embarrassed that the story will taint Tesla in a negative light, goes on damage control when interviewed. Damage control for Elon Musk means outright lying.
In other words, Musk ability to raise capital is based on the idea that Tesla is far more than a money losing company. Profit losses, when he speaks to investors, is irrelevant because Tesla is worth more than GM.
